What is Alliant Energy? Community Solar?

Invest in a renewable resource located nearby and receive credit for the solar generation. This program is a simple way to reach your sustainability goal with the retirement of the renewable energy credits on behalf of the program, or upon request, on your behalf. With Alliant Energy? Community Solar, you can buy shares of renewable energy, generated from solar panels in a nearby community.

What's a share?

To understand what a share is, think about how community supported agriculture (CSA) works. When you buy into a CSA, you pay the farmer in advance, and then you get a portion of the fruits and veggies grown during the season. Alliant Energy? Community Solar is similar.

When you buy a share of Alliant Energy? Community Solar, you purchase a portion of the energy that is generated by the solar array. You can buy more than one share, up to 100% of your energy use.

Can I lower my bill on Alliant Energy??Community Solar?

You will receive a bill credit for a percentage of the energy output of the solar array. The bill credit for one share will average $24 to $36 annually and will vary depending on solar production.

  • Iowa customers monthly credit = $0.059 per kWh (residential and non-residential)
  • Wisconsin non-residential customers monthly credit = $0.056 per kWh

Example: A 1 MW Alliant Energy? Community Solar project will have 4,000 shares available at 250W each. A customer who purchases 20 shares will receive a monthly bill credit for 0.5% of the array’s solar energy production.

How much does it cost?

  • Iowa customers: $35 enrollment fee and one-time, upfront payment of approximately $350 per share
  • Wisconsin customers: $25 enrollment fee and one-time, upfront payment of approximately $300 per share

Who is eligible to participate?

You need to receive electricity from Alliant Energy.

If you are enrolled in Second Nature, you can also participate in Alliant Energy? Community Solar.

When can I start?

Alliant Energy? Community Solar is subject to approval by the state utility commission/board, which we anticipate this summer in Wisconsin and later this year in Iowa. If you’re interested in participating, please email communitysolar@alliantenergy.com?and we will contact you when we know more.

Where will the solar array be located?

In Iowa, the solar array will be located in Cedar Rapids. In Wisconsin, we’re still exploring solar array locations.
